"" good morning and thanks for joining i'm lukas voss. we begin this morning with circumstances surrounding a fatal stabbing on the westside of sioux city. 50-year-old vernon mace was killed... and now the lone suspect is being held on murder charges. police responded to a call early wednesday morning at a home near the corner of west first and helmer. where they found mace suffering stab wounds. he was taken to mercy medical center where he died. 10 hours later... police apprehended the man they believe to be responsible, 47-year old eliase wanatee. who was booked on 1st degree murder charges this afternoon. wanatee has a previous criminal

second degree murder conviction which he served 10 years for. and details surrounding mace's death are now surfacing abc9 news reporter christina grijalva brings us reaction from the victim's family. "i never in my life would have imagined..." a sioux city man was fatally stabbed on the 19-hundred block of west first street early wednesday morning-- right down the way from his own front door. the victim was identified as vernon mace-- the father of verna hoffman. "no more than a few feet away from where i sleep and i didn't hear anything, like i couldn't save him..i... " the tragedy comes at the hand of someone mace's family knows-- 47-year-old elias wanatee, the

niece.- none of the family members knew wanatee showed up at the house and confronted mace outside wednesday morning "he waited for my dad to come out of the house, he waited out here. when my dad came out, he and my dad had a verbal whatever...um they started arguing. he chased my dad down the block and stabbed him down the block and my dad made it back to the house to get help." mace was taken to mercy medical-- where he passed away due to injuries. sioux city police aprehended wanatee 10 hours after responding to the inital call. wannatee is being held at the woodbury county jail on second degree murder charges. although, mace's family can breathe a sigh of relief that wanatee is off the pedestrian with his car in sac county is now in

authorities in fort dodge located jeremy werneburg at a wal mart yesterday. he's being charged for attempted murder after police say werneburg struck a man in carna-vun, iowa sunday night and then drove away from the scene. he's also being charged with assaulting an officer after resisting arrest. lukas: a person trying to check in a gun through the sioux gateway airport may be facing steep fines according to the t-s-a, the passenger attempted to bring the loaded gun in their carry on bag sunday. the 3-80 caliber firearm, was confiscated by sioux city police. now the person may be facing a fine up to 11 thousand dollars for disobeying t- s-a protocol this kind of occurence is happening more often, last year alone ... officers found more than two thousand six hundred guns in carry on bags a 20 per-cent increase from the previous year lukas: emergency responders were called to put out a fire at the winnavegas casino. sloan fire department responded yesterday... after crews were working on propane gas lines

caught fire. thankfully, the fire was put out quickly and no major injuries were reported. no word yet on damage caused by the fire lukas: and now turning our attention to the state house... state legislators are making their final push on several proposed bills. tommorow marks the end of what's known as "funnel week" at the capitol ... requiring bills to get their final approval by committee in order to be eligible for continued debate. one of those bills gaining traction at the state house, would expand iowa's access to medical cannabis. for the second time this session. a group of advocate families took a stand outside the statehouse in order to support the cause for cannabis to be produced and dispenced in the state. "simply the stigma to medical cannabis needs to end. we know that the discussion about "getting high" is so far gone. we know the research is out their. we know it's benefiting states and their residents and iowa staying stagnent is not proactive " "the primary substance that our iowa youth, without any expansion on

66.3% of kids entering treatment have marijuana as their drug of choice." the bill has not passed through the commerce committee... so it'll have to be debated among the full senate. the bill looks considerably different than the one lawmakers tackled last session. the 12 dispensaries and four manufacturers included last year have been cutback to just two facilities and both manufacture and dispense the cannabis oil ... and instead of 11 illnesses qualifying for the treatment ... only three now qualify. another group of suffering iowans had also gathered at the capitol recently to promote the "death with dignity act." we are learning the bill will not be be moving on this session ... becoming a victim of funnel week. the act would have given those suffereing from terminal illness the choice of euthenasia or assisted suicide. lukas: one bill that got unanimous approval by the

committee aims to change the way drivers share the road with bikes. the bill under consideration would require motor vehicles to pass bicycles in an adjacent travel lane... making passing a bike the same as passing a car or truck on roads. the bill is now eligible for debate in the iowa senate. lukas: aproximately 560- thousand iowans are in the middle of watching their healthcare change hands. and yesterday marked an important day in the transition. the deadline for people to decide which private company they want managing their healthcare coverage. amanda krenz has more from des moines. "amerigroup, amerihealth, united healthcare. iowa is only days away from these three companies taking over medicaid and the hawk-i program - which insures kids. letters went out to families asking them to make their decision by february 17th about which company they want to use. but there's a major hiccups for people who have to make this choice - their healthcare provider, whether that's a doctor, pharmacist, a clinic, a pediatrician, or

(fs) only 60 percent of providers in the state have signed contracts with all three of the private companies. 70 percent have signed with two. and 90 percent have signed with just one of the companies. "" "it's been just days since 79- year-old supreme court justice antonin scalia passed away in texas.... politicians on both sides of the aisle are debating who should appoint his replacement. president obama says he will fill the seat...but republican lawmakers say that job should be left to the next president... chairman of the senate judiciary committee and iowa senator chuck grassley is one of them. medicine and clinical research, we're learning more about the human body than we ever knew before. but ...there's relatively little explanation about why in some cases ... the five senses are intertwined. abc9 news anchor jenna rehnstrom tells us more in this week's your health matters. soren peterson grew up assuming everyone knew that the number two is lime green. while you and i just see black numbers on a page, for this 8th grader, algebra homework is alive with color. soren says, "for instance, the number 13 would be a dark blue onend a maroon three." it wasn't until his parents caught part of a tv program about the phenomenon, that soren realized what he experieced was different. soren says, "i said, 'oh, i see like that!" "right now we don't exactly understand

certain people have this." while reaching to learn more, soren's mom, marcy, found a friend who could identify. marcy peterson says, "i was so glad when i posted something and you said, gretchen, oh, i have that!" gretchen baller and her daughter, seneca, also experience the world in a different way... but for them, color is percieved, not just through sight... but also taste. gretchen says, "i think i was making a pot of chili, and it wasn't quite right and i was tasting it, and i thought, 'it needs more purple.'" seneca says, "i thought it was just a normal thing." biting into a piece of fruit floods seneca's taste buds.. and her other senses. seneca says, "i'm seeing pink and yellow." seneca, gretchen and soren have what's known as synesthesia. the term itself comes from greek words meaning "joined perception." it happens when one sense is simultaneously perceived with one or more additional senses. dr. lee baugh, phd

pairing of two senses that are typically removed from one another." dr. lee baugh is an assistant professor of neuroscience at usd's sanford school of medicine. he did his undergraduate studies at one of the leading research institutes examining synesthesia and says it is estimated to affect anywhere from one in every 200 people to one in 2,000. so, why? there's still not a proven cause, but dr. baugh explains one theory that's being researched now. dr. baugh says, "when we're very young, we have far more connections between neurons in our brain than we do as an adult, and through the process of development, a lot of those connections actually get severed. and, people think what may be happening in synesthesia is some of those connections are remaining past those developmental points. so, you have connections between brain regions that typically aren't there." dr. baugh says there are up to 60

"he has earned this right, most people say that he deserves this or whatever. tony has earned this, he's earned the right to go to las vegas and do this. for all that he's done and put up with in his lifetime. he deserves and he's earned that right to get out there." says marketing director of winnavegas travis morgan. tony will need to bring four caregivers along with him ... since in n his current condition requires 24-7 care. but family members know that getting him to las vegas is all that matters. siouxlandmatters dot com. lukas: researchers at seattle's fred hutchinson cancer research center announced a potential new breakthrough in the fight against cancer. the treatment is based on what's called "immuno- therapy" it helps a person's immumu system fight off cancer cells s a way that's similar to fighting a virus. in the treatment ... doctors take white blood cells called t-cells from cancer patients and genetically modify them. the cells are then put back in the patient to multiply. the research has not yet been reviewed by other scientists... but in one study - the therapy eliminated all symptoms in 94 percent of participants with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. lukas: a new report linking popular antacids... with a 44 percent increase in the risk of dementia. the headline causing a lot of concern... and alot of questions. abc's chief medical editor doctor richard besser has more. "reaction to a study that hits people where they hurt -- heartburn -- and forecasts what they

of dementia. basically my entire family takes prilosec daily the study only looked at those over age 75 o took prescription heartburn drugs like prilosec or previcid on a regular basis. and while it found an increased risk of dementia it esn't provthat the drugs were the cause. nat a commercial--- americans spend more than $10billion a year on these two main classes of heartburn medicines, proton pump inhibitors and h2 blockers?. available by prescription or over the counter. but look at this: it's on the label. you're only supposed to use the over the counter ones for two weeks. the prescription ones, for most people, just for a f f months. lukas: if you think you're being healthier by skipping the soda machine and going to starbucks... you may want to think again. a new study found that some flavored coffee drinks can contain more sugar than soda. the group, action found some of the

teaspoons of sugar. that's three times more sugar than in one can of soda... and more than three times the maximum adult daily intake recocoended by the american heart association. starbucks says it has committed to reduce added sugar in its "indulgent drinks" by 25-percent... at the end of 2020. lukas: migraines can take their toll but as they're about to start... there may be other non-drug related ways to manage the disorder. reporter jim morelli has more. "medications can alleviate migraine symptoms, but there is no cure. there's not one thing we can do to end the migraines for all time at this point. but there are a lot different options that we can offer - and we can hopefully and most likely get you to a better place than where you are. dr carolyn bernstein runs the headache center at boston's beth israel-deaconess medical center. a migraine sufferer herself, bernstein is exploring alternative ways to manage the disease. --nats-- one thing she's come up with: indoor cycling. it's a form of exercise ideal for miaine sufferers,
